Zafferana Etnea is a little village which is well known for its charming Baroque Churches.
The territory of Zafferana was crossed, since the Roman domination, by an important road connecting the town of Tauromenium to Katane, providing an alternative route to the main Via Valeria that ran along the Ionian coast. This road allowed the Roman soldiers to escape from enemy attacks allowing them to reach Mount Etna and its woods. The current old town centre was founded in 1387 with the building of the Priorato di San Giacomo, a Benedictine monastery built in the Middle Ages. Later in 1694, the village was named “Zafarana” and then Zafferana Etnea.
The main holy places of the village are the Church Maria of SS della Provvidenza which is a well preserved example of Sicilian Baroque building made with the precious white stone from Syracuse and a black lava-stone staircase; and the Mother Church of SS del Rosario, built with three naves, impressive sacred printings and four chapels.
