Cathedral of San Giovanni Evangelista in Scicli

Province of Ragusa

The Cathedral of San Giovanni Evangelista is a well preserve example of the famous Sicilian Baroque style.

Located in the heart of Scicli, the Cathedral of San Giovanni Evangelista is one of the 18 monuments included on the UNESCO World Heritage List. Built in 1776, it conserves invaluable Baroque frescos supported by a series of Ionic columns made with a precious white marble. Due to the white colour of its interior and its spectacularly painted ceiling, the church appears very bright and radiant.

One of the most important attractions of the church is the Crucifix of Burgos (1696), called by citizens Cristo in gonnella (Christ with the skirt). The painting displays a particular representation of Christ, clothed with a white dress from the hips to the ankles, placed on a dark and gloomy background. This painting refers to Spanish iconography dating back to the seventeenth century inspired by the wooden sculpture of Christ (XIV century) located in the church of Santa Maria of Burgos (Spain).
