Castronovo di Sicilia has ancient origins characterised by many important colonisations such as the Sicani who created the first settlement along the Platani river, Romans, Bizantine, Arabs and Normans. Due to its relevant reputations, Normans built its first University in 1400. This tiny village offers a wide variety of cultural attractions such as the Caves, located near the mouth of the Platani river, are a open air museum where it is possible to discover ancient settlements and a well preserved necropolis dating back to the 6th century BC; the Church of Calvario, built in 1810 on the ruins of the old Convent of S. Antonio Abate. The Church of San Pietro, located near the Platani river, was built with a Bizantine style. The Mother Church, dedicated to the SS.Trinità, was built in 1091 with a Latin cross plan. It is considered as an important mausoleum in Sicily with its impressive stuccos and frescos created by the Sicilian painter Anotnio Messina, the Greek-Bizantine sacristy and the precious organ made by Raffaele Della Valle;
the Church of Santa Caterina d’Alessandria, is one of the most beautiful holy places of the village thanks to its inestimable Corinthian-Romanesque decorations; the Church of Madonna del Rosario, built in 1621, depicts the incredible stuccos made by Antonio Messina; the Church of Santo Stefano of Melia, built in 1188 on the ruins of an ancient Bizantine castle, has a wonderful painted Crucifix from 1300; the Church of Santa Rosalia built in 1625 and The Convent of PP. Cappuccini, built in 1533.

Close to Castronovo there are 24 water mills, located along the river Platani which are considered a symbol of the village. The Castle built in 1077 has a particular structure inspired by the Arabs domination. The Palazzo Giandalia, built in 1200 by the Alondres family with local limestone, includes a Norman tower and impressive vaults made by the famous painter Giuseppe Enea who created the Massimo Theatre in Palermo.
