Pozzallo

Pozzallo is located on the southern coast of Sicily framed by a prominent Mediterranean Vegetation.

Pozzallo is the only maritime comune in the Ragusa province. It started being relevant in 14th century as Modica’s gateway to the sea. But Pozzallo is a very ancient town in fat, findings of ancient Roman coins from 72 and 250 A.d. are a testimony of Roman and Bizantyne periods. Ruled by Saracens and then by Arabs, the village became a strategic port, in fact they built a watchtower, Torre Cabrera, which was used to monitor both defense and commercial trade. Pozzallo’s most beautiful churches are Chiesa Madonna del Rosario, Chiesa Santa Maria di Portosalvo, Chiesa San Giovanni Battista, Chiesa San Paolo Apostolo.
A curiosity linked to Pozzallo regards the first underwater phone cable of Mediterranean Sea which was laid in 1954 to connect Pozzallo with Malta, replacing telegraphs. This phone cable still lies on the bottom of the sea, although it is no more used.

Follow E90 and A19 to Strada Statale 643/SS643 in Scillato. Take exit Scillato from A19,
Take Strada Provinciale 24/SP24 and SS120 to A19/E932 in Castellana Sicula
Follow A19/E932 and A18 to Strada Provinciale 26/E45 in Rosolini
Take SS115 and SP46 to Pozzallo
