Santa Flavia

Province of Palermo

Santa Flavia attracts many tourists due to its coast, its beautiful citrus groves and its beautiful neighbouring villages.

Santa Flavia was founded in 1600 by some of the most important Sicilian aristocratic families who built there their summer residences creating the old town village. Every year this amazing little town attracts many tourists due to its coast, its beautiful citrus groves and its beautiful neighbouring villages. One of which is Porticello, a tiny village built with the typical tuff stones of Sicily, where fishermen and their families found refuge. Another is Solanto, where during the summer time there are plenty of events such as the Soluntum Art Festival, the Sagra della Zagara (named after a citrus flower), the Solunto Film Festival (a film and photographic festival about the sea), and then for food lovers there is an unmissable event called Unti, contenti e sazi, a festival for street local food. Solunto has an Archaeologic Site, where archaeologists discovered the old Greek city founded in the mid- fourth century B.C. Thanks to the importance of these ruins, the ancient city has been defined as a “little Pompei”; here recent excavations have brought to light various public buildings, such as its large square, altars, a theatre and an odeum. The basilica Soluntina di Sant’Anna is the most important church of the village, along with Chiesa Maria SS del Lume and the Castle of Sòlanto, originally built to protect the tuna fishery.
