Church of San Giovanni degli Eremiti

Palermo City

The Church of San Giovanni degli Eremiti is a jewel of Palermo with a charming well preserved cloister.

The Church of San Giovanni degli Eremiti, just a few steps from the imposing Royal Palace, tucked away on a small side street you will find this lovely little jewel. The church itself has undergone extensive changes. It was initially a 6th-century church, then turned into a mosque for awhile and consequently returned to the Christians during the Norman period. Restorations have tried to revive this church to its original medieval appearance but there are visible influences of other cultures that have remained. As it is quite empty inside, the reason to visit this site is the architectural structure and layout. Rather naked inside, the charm of this 6th-century church are the bright pinky-red domes and the well-preserved cloister. In this corner of the city you will be able to escape the chaos of Palermo and enjoy the quiet and relaxed atmosphere of this tiny lovely and peaceful garden.
