Sant’Agata di Militello

Province of Messina

Sant’Agata di Militello is a charming medieval town which includes the Nebrodi Regional Park, a wonderful nature reserve.

Located between Messina and Palermo, Sant’Agata di Militello is a medieval town founded in 1371 by Vinciguerra d’Aragona, and built around the Torre della Marina. Later in 1573 the Gallego family acquired the village and started construction of the current old town centre.

The most important monuments of the village are the Gallego Castle, built in the 17th century with two majestic towers and a wonderful private church; the Church of Madonna del Carmelo, erected in the 16th century; the Nebrodi Anthropological Museum which displays over 400 objects and findings from the 25 tiny villages of Nebrodi; the Church of Carmelo is a building dating back to the 13th century with a Neoclassical facade; the Parrocchia Santa Lucia, built in 1969 by Monsignor Giuseppe Pullano; the Church of Assunta, built between the 12th and the 13th century; and last but not least the Mother Church, this amazing Duomo was built between 1842 and 1863 and its facade is characterized by a series of Corinthian columns with a impressive mosaic representing the “Sacred Family”.

Close to the village it is possible to visit the Nebrodi Regional Park, created in 1993 to protect the largest green area in Sicily. The park has 4 areas characterised by different natural environments which create impressive habitats for rare flora and fauna species.
