Church of St. Maria of the Chain

Palermo City

The Church of St. Maria of The Chain is a small and charming holy place located next to the sea.

The Church of St. Maria of the Chain owes its name to the long chain that was used around the exterior walls to lock the ancient port of Palermo at night and protect them from invaders. Erected in 1400s, St. Mary of the Chain is a small church located next to the sea in a small square near Palermo’s harbour. Off the beaten track of the touristy itinerary, this church is considered a superb example of the gothic-catalan style with some renaissance influence. The interior is relatively plain with stone columns and arches but well worth a visit.  The exterior high staircase that leads to the entrance is just lovely!
